Venn Diagram

Today, I read an interesting article by Dr. Shoshana Zuboff about surveillance capitalism and I made a venn diagram based on it, which I think is pretty cool.

Anyway, I also came up with a clever way to remember the password to an important email…

Look for the subject line:

FWD: Attention: The Attention Layer is Here! (Offer Enclosed)

Venn diagram showing the three components of surveillance capitalism.

Man, I really hate those tech companies profiting off my data.

  1. Text-to-speech tool that does not save any audio data and encrypts your text data.
  2. Research firm sells analytics predicting optimal repair times to an airline company based only on digital plane sensors. No data on human subjects is collected or sold.
  3. Social media website analyzes user likes and posts to sell third parties insights on how to improve their advertisements.
  4. Car manufacturer adds a digital system to prevent starting the vehicle if the driver appears to be under the influence. The data is not used for any other purpose.
  5. Wellness technology company collects data on user activity levels, biometrics, and nutrition through a smartwatch app and sells it to a health insurance company.

For example…

Item #3 has digital tech (social media) + monitoring behavior (likes and posts) + selling predictions (insights for advertisers), so the overlap of those three circles would be surveillance capitalism (N). There's probably at least one more example of surveillance capitalism on this list…
